Letters.

I wish the act of letter writing was still practiced.

A letter has the power to illustrate so many emotions and so much truth. Handwriting can be an interesting insight to the person writing and nowadays we rely entirely on typed text. An email, message or text message can be fixed. It can be erased, spell-checked, clearly read, previewed, drafted, edited...perfected. The interesting things about handwritten letters are the imperfections. The smear of the pen ink, the print that slowly changes to cursive while spurting out a heart-felt concept, the scratched out words, the wrinkle in the page, the way it's signed, the way it's sealed, the way it's addressed.

When my Grandmother was going to college, she told me her and my Grandfather would write letters back and forth, because they were going to different colleges. She grinned and said, "I was so excited every time a new letter would come in the mail."

In middle school through high school my friends and I would write letters to each other, and I remember all of those ridiculous colored pens we would use. It was so much fun. I still have alot of mine saved...somewhere. I remember how thrilling it was to receive one from a boy or crush, and how many times I would read over it and rehearse it to my friends.

Do you have any good memories of letter writing?

The XX

I recently came across the pop experimental group The XX, and have willingly placed them in my "new obsession" category.

The young London quartet formed in 2008. They have been creating a unique mix of pop and R&B, along with 80s-esque guitar rhythms and breathy vocal duets. They have referenced influences such as Aaliyah, Rhiana, the Chromatics, the Pixies and The Cure.

They're Facebook profile says it best, "It all started in a bedroom in southwest London, after school, drinking too much Pepsi. We just keep on growing."

You can listen to their album here.

Also check out this awesome remix of "Shelter."

I want to do it all.

I know I have a case of the horrible lefty handwriting, but my mind wandered while doing school work (as always).

How Your Heart Is Wired.

I was digging through the stack of CDs in my car on the drive back home, hoping to come across an album that would serve as a soundtrack to nostalgic thought, but I settled for a Paste Magazine sampler from May/June. As I flicked through this sampler back in May, and surpassed the strange country folk that Paste seems to tack on, I must have skipped over track No. 3, Bell X1.

I found myself playing Bell X1 "How Your Heart Is Wired" on repeat the entirety of my drive, jumping over to The Rocketboys for a few, and back to Bell X1. I kept thinking, "Man there must be a cool music video for this song..." but there isn't one. The lyrics are practically begging for animation and ambiguous interpretations, but all I found was the recording below of two different performance threaded together. There were tons of live performance videos, but the audio was best on this one.

Here is a link to a free download, so hopefully you will like it too.

My tongue is scaling the North face of your neck
And we're glaring like warriors but,
I've a feelin' you won't look at me that way in the morning
Cos lately you seem less sure of this thing
You're like Bambi on Ice
And there's something in the flash of your arms
A certain longing
Kick the can I can't see you now behind that temper and ire
Mister wolf knows what time it is
He says it's dinner time
I don't know what you're carrying or how you're heart is wired
but there's a dangerous ticking.
I cut the red one, No, the Blue one
I cut the red one,
I cut the blue one
Raking over the embers and what I come across?
Is that you, combing your hair?
Is that me, eating an egg?
And are we there
Like John Boy said?
My tongue is scaling the North face of your neck
And we're glaring like warriors but,
I've a feelin' you won't look at me that way
I've a feelin' you won't look at me that way
I've a feelin' you won't look at me that way
in the morning.
Is this how it goes,
In these, the final throws?

ACL Fest Web Cast

This past weekend was the much anticipated Austin City Limits Festival, and it was great. Despite the dreary weather and mud mess, I was in my element. My friend Scott Leighton, web editor at the University Star, asked if I would join him and Ashley Dickinson, trends editor, to discuss the weekend.

Take a listen to the web cast here!

I will be posting photos and videos soon.

Magic in the tunnel.

This is Share. Yet another great band to come out of Canada. They have a great new album Slumping in Your Murals, and this video is so simple and great. Listen for the reverb. I would love to be sitting aside this recording.
